Can computers think for themselves, without people? Computers are able to do more and more all the time. Robin Basselin and Ryan Geertsma look at the future of computer intelligence.

Welcome to Spotlight. I’m Robin Basselin.

Voice 2

And I’m Ryan Geertsma. Spotlight uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.

Voice 1

100 years ago, there were no computers. 35 years ago, some computers were so big that they filled a whole room. But just five years ago, a computer could fit into a person’s hand. And today, powerful computers are even smaller than that.

Voice 2

Technology is always changing. And the rate at which it changes is always speeding up. Because of this exponential change, we can barely imagine what will happen next. But many scientists believe that soon computers will achieve artificial intelligence or AI. Computers can already solve difficult problems and complete complex processes - like driving a car or playing the game of chess. But intelligence includes much more than this. Intelligent beings know they are alive, they understand emotion and they are able to be creative. Many scientists believe computers will achieve this level of intelligence and more! Today's Spotlight is on the idea of Artificial Intelligence.

Voice 1

Many scientists believe that the intelligence of computers will soon become even greater than the intelligence of humans. No one knows when or how it will happen. But some scientists who study the future of technology call this possible event – ‘The Singularity.’ A key part of achieving ‘The Singularity’ is the ability to create! Scientists believe that after singularity, computers will begin to design other new and more complex computers. Many people question if this could ever happen. But Stephen Hawking disagrees. He is an internationally famous scientist. In a speech, he said,

Voice 3

"Very complex chemical molecules operate in humans to make them intelligent. So it seems to me that equally complex electronic processes can also make computers act in an intelligent way. And if they are intelligent, they may be able to design computers that have even greater complexity and intelligence."

Voice 2

Many scientists call this process the "Intelligence Explosion." They believe AI computers will design more complex computers - at an increasing rate of speed. Many universities and scientists are studying this possibility. Organizations such as Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute are trying to prepare humans for it. Scientists do not know what an intelligence explosion could look like. But many of them agree that the future of the human race will change - in ways we do not yet understand. At a scientific conference in 2006, scientist, Eli Yudkowsky, spoke about the huge effect of this change. He said,

Voice 4

"Over and over again, intelligence has achieved things that once seemed impossible and even strange. And we are not talking about a jump like the one from hunting and gathering to the Internet... The intelligence explosion would be a much bigger jump. It could and probably will re-shape the whole world."

Voice 1

Many scientists believe this future change will be positive. They say that computers will be able to solve problems that humans have never been able to solve - like poverty and disease. Many believe that humans will combine their bodies with computers to achieve greater abilities or longer life. Some even believe that people could defeat death by putting their brain and genetic information into a computer.

Voice 2

Other scientists are concerned about the negative effects of the “Intelligence Explosion.” They worry about the danger of computer designed weapons. Computer expert and scientist Bill Joy wrote a story for Wired magazine about AI. In it, he explained that many nations already have weapons of mass destruction that can kill large groups of people. But he believes it will be even more dangerous after the “Intelligence Explosion.” He wrote,

Voice 5

"I think it is fair to say that we are on the edge of perfecting extreme evil. This evil could spread past the possibilities of weapons of mass destruction."

Voice 1

Other scientists think that it is not computer-designed weapons that are the main danger. They think the danger is the computers themselves. Many films in popular culture present this idea. They tell stories in which computers take over the world and destroy human life. This is an idea that many scientists take seriously. Daniel Dewey studies at Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute. He told Motherboard online magazine,

Voice 6

"Artificial intelligence could lead to the end of humanity, the continuous unequal treatment of humans, or other risks... If we understand the risks better, we can make better decisions to avoid them or decrease the damage."

Voice 2

Scientists disagree on what the future of AI could look like. But many agree that AI is possible. They believe computers can achieve human intelligence because they believe humans are completely physical beings. Hawking proposed that human brains and computers work in basically the same way. But can this be true? Are humans just the total of their molecular parts? And is brain power the only thing that defines human nature?

Voice 1

John Searle would say no! Searle is a professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkley. He often argues with scientists about artificial intelligence. Searle believes that computers can never achieve human consciousness. He believes that humans know they are alive in a way that computers will never be able to. Scientists may create computers with programs that model consciousness. But Searle does not think this is the same thing as true consciousness.

Voice 2

Many people would agree with Searle. They believe that there is something more to humans that cannot be re-produced. Many philosophies and religions teach that humans are both physical and spiritual beings. And it is this spiritual component that many people believe computers will never achieve.

Voice 1

Genesis is the Jewish and Christian story of creation.  This story talks about the creation of humanity. It says:

Voice 7

"Then God formed a person from the dust of the ground. He breathed into him the breath of life, so that he became a living being."

Voice 2

This story of human origins shows how God created humans with close care and attention. It says that what makes us fully human is the breath of God. And it teaches that humans are more than a material collection of parts.

Voice 1

Computers will continue to become more and more intelligent. They may even be able to do things that the human brain cannot do. But will they ever have true consciousness like humans do? Do you think computers will think for themselves, without people? Are you afraid of thinking computers? Why or why not?

I’m learning about AI in school. Computers are being more and more intelligent. But I believe that human have somethings what computer never can do, they never have true consciousness like humans do.

It is the most interesting program which I have ever listened at spotlight. Although technology plays an important role in our society but they can not alternate people. Because Human designs software and hardware so computers are depended on people. The fact that artificial intelligence is more and more important to help human to solve difficult problems. And I hope that in the near future we will have more smart robot to solve serious diseases such as ebola virus, A flu virus…

The computers were created by people and for that reason humans should lead computers just as direct their changing and development too. Certainly, people should always rule over computers, never on the contrary! Computers have the high artificial intelligence but no emotions, that is why I suppose they will never achieve the true consciousness like humans do, moreover, these technological produces miss absolutely that mentioned difficult spiritual component which is only included in human beings. Computers really represent the excellent, useful helpers of people, if the developed technology is used in the wise, well considered way then it will never become the harmful, destructive factor for humans race in the future.
Thanks for excellent topic!

Humans may depart from the rules and they may even do mistakes.

For me, computers with AI won’t earn all consciousness like humans have. I think that AI will never give the totality of human emotions, like the love of a mom for their kid or the happyness of the belief in God.

Thank y ou so much for this big program.
Computers are wonderful machines that make our lives better and more productive. I use to say that I don’t know how we lived before the creation of computers. For me, life is before and after computers and I don’t remember how was my life before I know to maneuvre a computer.
Computers are made by humans and they works like the humans comand them. They will make any kind of operation we want they do, but they don’t make what we don’t determine to them.

I am working for an online magazine about technology and industrial machineries, and I interested in Artificial Intelligence - AI, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Smart City, Blockchain, etc.

In my opinion, in the future, robot with AI will be more intelligence than human, because humans are completely physical beings. Human have only about 8 hours/ a day to learn, study,... they also need time to relax, recovery and ... sleep!, However, Robot with AI, they don’t need time to relax and sleep, they can learn and analyze every things with high speed. For example, Robot with AI win a champion of Chess with many times. although he has many experience years to learn and study.
